Disease is universal, healthcare is NOT.
we aim to put Health in Focus
ABOUT US
Health in Focus (HIF) is a health charity working with communities, healthcare professionals, researchers, and local partners to tackle gaps in prevention and access to care. Our goal is not simply to run more projects. It is to discover what works, measure it, improve it and help effective ideas grow.
We are currently 100% volunteer-run, with $0 in employee expenses. In our 2025 Annual Information Statement, 98.12% of our funds went directly to our missions, with only 1.88% used for administration fees. To date, we have mobilized more than $500,000 AUD toward our missions.
Even though 98.12% of funding goes directly to our missions, we strive to use these funds as effectively as possible. For example, with our heart health checks in Melbourne Australia, our research shows that a $1 donation leads to a approx. $10.30 return on social investment in 1-3 years time. Please see the bottom section of the heart health check page for our full SROI calculation.
WHY US?
-
We’re building a global living lab network that brings communities, healthcare professionals, and organisations together to co-design, test, and implement practical solutions across different settings.
-
Communities define the challenges, set the priorities, and shape the response. Our work is led by volunteers based in the countries and communities where we operate, with support from HIF’s wider global network of healthcare professionals, researchers, students, and partner organisations.
We reject any volunteering that puts a visitor’s experience ahead of community needs. As such, we have only sent volunteers overseas once in December 2022 (Australia to Vietnam 2 week intensive trip). Such missions can be done ethically if with humility, appropriate skills, and respect for local expertise - to strengthen local capacity, support community priorities, and leave lasting value behind. This is hard to do, hence why any future overseas trip plans take an extensive time to properly prepare.
-
Transparent: Our financial information is publicly available through the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), so supporters can see how HIF is funded and how resources are used. We believe trust starts with openness about our finances, our results, and where we still need to improve.
Accountable: We measure more than activity. The number of clinics, volunteers, or people reached tells only part of the story, so we also evaluate outcomes, seek community feedback, and look for unintended consequences. What we learn is used to improve, redesign, and reconsider what we do next.
Effective: 98.12% of our funding goes directly to our programs, but effectiveness is about more than simply spending money on programs. We aim to make every dollar work harder by directing resources toward locally identified priorities, evidence-informed interventions and areas of greatest need. We track outcomes, listen to communities, compare what is working across our network, and adapt or redirect resources when something is not delivering meaningful impact. This approach helps us maximise the health benefit created by the funding, time and expertise entrusted to HIF.
-
Evidence helps shape our approach. What we learn through community experience and evaluation helps us improve our programs and identify the questions that need answering next.
-
Meaningful change takes time. We prioritise sustained involvement over one-off placements, so volunteers can build trust, understand local context, and contribute as programs evolve. Clear preparation, continuity, and responsible handovers ensure that relationships, knowledge, and responsibility stay with the mission, not with any one volunteer. People join an ongoing effort; communities are never treated as a temporary experience.
